Area piano students compete in contest at Harper

The Northwest Suburban Music Teachers Association sponsored the Sonata-Sonatina Festival for local piano students at Harper College, in the Music Instruction building, on Sunday, Nov. 6. A total of 326 students of 52 teachers participated in this event.

Each student performed one movement of a Sonata or two contrasting movements of a Sonatina from memory and received a participant’s ribbon and a written critique from an independent judge. The students’ performances were graded and the following awards were earned: 133 Gold Medals, 181 Silver Medals and 12 Bronze Medals.

The festival fosters high levels of achievement offering students the opportunity to focus their efforts and receive recognition. It also provides objective guidelines for their continued growth as pianists and musicians.

Students who earned Gold Medals participated in the Gold Medal Recital on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 19, at Countryside Church, 1025 N. Smith Road, Palatine. Most of the 133 eligible students signed up to participate.

The Gold Medal Recital affords students an opportunity to both perform for large groups and to listen to a wide variety of Sonatas and Sonatinas from all musical periods and levels of difficulty.
