Singhsumalee simply super at Marist sectional
Waubonsie Valley freshman Bing Singhsumalee shot a 71 on Monday at the Class AA Marist girls golf sectional and heads to state this weekend.
It’s a new experience for Singhsumalee, but certainly not a new experience in big competitions for her.
“The summer tournaments that she competes in are like the pressure of a sectional or state meet,” Waubonsie coach John Farnan said. “She’s an all-around player and there were no weaknesses today.”
Singhsumalee shot a 37 on the front nine and 34 on the back at the Old Oak Country Club in Homer Glen for a 71, with only sectional champ Rosanna Lederhausen of Hinsdale Central (70) in front of her.
“The course was pretty hard. There were some delays because of rule interpretations in the group in front of us,” she said. “My irons were really consistent. Putting, the speed of the greens was good. I’m working on my driving. I’m real excited to go to state.”
Singhsumalee and two other area golfers qualified for the state meet that runs Friday and Saturday at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.
Joining her will be Metea Valley senior Natalya Schleebs, who finished in a three-way tie for third place with a 78. She played to a 39 on the front and back nines.
“I need to learn the exact distance when I need to chip on the green. You had to keep your drives straight in the fairways, with trees on each side,” Schleebs said. “I could have shot better. I had three birdies. I’m happy with my score. I wanted to go to state and I have no problem with a 78.”
“Natalya has been steady all year and has gotten better in conference, regionals and sectionals. She shot a 75, 76 and today a 78,” Metea Valley coach Mark Jager said.
Waubonsie Valley finished seventh as a team with a 356. Metea was ninth at 362. Hinsdale Central won the sectional title at 317 with Marian Catholic in second (334) and Lyons Township (347) taking third; those three squads advanced to state for the team competition.
Also counting in the team score for the Warriors were Courtney Williams (93), Maddie Phillips (95) and Kendall O’Sullivan (97). Rebecca O’Bryan (99) and Emily Copeland (111) also competed.
Amy Lundstram shot an 89 for Metea Valley with Anna Petersen (97) and Alynna Vaughn (98) rounding out the scorecard. Also playing for Metea were Brittany smith (105) and Monique France (118).
The third player from the area heading to state is Benet junior Christy Callahan, who shot an 83. Emily Callahan was just 1 stroke off the state pace at 84. Ali Mahoney shot a 98.
“She (Christy) played well. She didn’t play as well on the second nine. But she advanced and is heading to state,” Benet coach Tony LaScala said.
Eight other area golfers qualified for Monday’s sectional, but did not advance. They included Sarah DeGeeter (86) and Hannah Zeeb (96) of Naperville Central; Taylor Arenson (85), Caroline Pierson (95) and Lauren Bruski (96) of Naperville North; and Faith Goetz (97), Kyleigh Dallner (99) and Morgan Rogers (102) of Neuqua Valley.
