Waukegan tutor honored for literacy work

Chicago-area adult literacy tutors were honored with Outstanding Tutor Awards at the 20th annual "On the Road to Literacy Conference" on Saturday, April 9.

Tutors awarded have made a commitment to volunteer by tutoring adults who have low literacy skills and have selflessly given hours well beyond a typical commitment and grown literacy programs through their dedication and open-heartedness.

The awards were made by the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois and co-host UIC's Center for Literacy.

Although every tutor honored has shown admirable qualities and led students to growth and success, highlights stand out.

Toby Anstett of Adult Learning Connection at Waukegan Public Library in Lake County has volunteered hundreds of hours in 2010. Anstett “honors each student's unique way of learning” which ensures her students constantly experience success in their learning, according to program coordinator Barbara Babb. Anstett also develops thorough and rigorous education plans for students who live in far western Lake County and for who distance can be a hurdle, ensuring their success with their permanent tutor.

Literacy Volunteers of Illinois is an organization that is committed to developing and supporting volunteer literacy programs that help adults, families, and out-of-school teens increase their literacy skills.
