Failed drug test leads Wood Dale man back to jail

A 19-year-old Wood Dale man accused of supplying drugs to a teenager who overdosed and lapsed into a coma, failed a court-ordered drug test Wednesday and was sent back to jail.

Christopher J. Grzeca has been free since posting 10 percent of a $20,000 bond following his July arrest. On Wednesday, DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin ordered Grzeca to undergo a drug test for a hearing where prosecutors were seeking to have his bond increased. The results showed marijuana in his system.

Prosecutors sought to have his bond increased to $200,000, but Grzeca's lawyer asked that the bond only be doubled from the current level "in light of the family's financial situation." Guerin imposed a $75,000 bond. Grzeca was immediately taken into custody and remains at the county jail in Wheaton. Since Grzeca has already posted $2,000, he needs to come up with $5,500 more to be set free again.

Grzeca is charged with drug-induced infliction of great bodily harm and possession of a controlled substance. He faces a possible sentence of probation or four to 15 years in prison if convicted.

He is accused of selling morphine pills to a 16-year-old Roselle boy who lapsed into a two-week coma after ingesting the pills in April. Grzeca got the pills from a friend whose father had a prescription for the drugs while battling cancer. The friend has not been charged.
