Scouting West Chicago boys basketball
West Chicago
Coach: Kevin Baldus.
Last year: 4-22, 0-14, eighth in DuPage Valley Conference; lost in 62-38 to WW South in Class 4A West Aurora regional quarterfinals.
Top players: Justin Mundt, sr., F-G; Josh Gimre, sr., G; Dylan Hedmark, sr., F; Brian Baids, sr., G; Tyler Schoenwolf, sr., F; Alex Weier, sr., G; Zack Doell, sr., F; Derek Evans, sr., G; John Konchar, so., G.
Scouting report: Expectations are high with four starters returning. Mundt leads the way after averaging 17 points and a team-high 4 rebounds last year. Unlike last year, though, the Wildcats will enjoy other scoring options to draw defensive attention away from Mundt. Gimre’s a threat on the perimeter while Schoenwolf, who didn’t play much last year, was the team’s second-leading scorer in the summer. Hedmark, at 6-foot-5, was the team’s second-leading scorer last season while patrolling the post. With Konchar joining the group at point guard, the Wildcats are poised to go about 10 deep with their rotation. “Now that most of these guys are seniors, they want to leave their mark on the program,” Baldus said.
