South Elgin High hosts engineering, architectural competition

Daily Herald report

The annual competition designed to provide real-life experiences for Project Lead the Way students will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at South Elgin High School in Room B100.

Nineteen teams from Elgin, Larkin, South Elgin, Streamwood, St. Charles North and Geneva high schools will compete.

The students will design an education center for the mythical village of Stormy Point based on specifications developed by engineers at DLM Architects and present their proposal to a panel of engineering experts.

This year the design specifications include engineering/structure components to incorporate learned skills from both the “Introduction to Engineering and Civil Engineering” and “Architecture Project Lead the Way” courses. Their building must fit into the environment with an observation tower and walking paths, and be handicap accessible.

Students, under the guidance of their instructors, worked as an architectural team on the project. The guidelines simulate the needs of a specific client providing a venue for students to practice technical skills to apply literacy/math/location information skills, and to experience the demands of architectural/engineering careers.

The career and Technical Education District/Northern Kane initiative collaboratively planned and facilitated through a business partnership with DLM Architects.
