Sinfonietta Bel Canto to host annual Voice Invitational Sept. 24
The Sinfonietta Bel Canto will feature some of the most talented young singers in the western suburbs at the annual Voice Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 24.
Selected singers from the 10th annual Sinfonietta Bel Canto Voice Competition will perform seven classic arias by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Georges Bizet, Marcello Giordani, Richard Strauss, and Franz Lehár.
The orchestra also will explore Adolf Weidig's "Three Episodes," Op. 38, at 3 p.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 5739 Dunham Road in Downers Grove.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Weidig immigrated to the United States in 1892 and later became the dean of theory at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
"Three Episodes" was originally premiered by both the Chicago Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic.
Tickets are $25, $22 for age 65 or older, or $8 for students. All concerts are general admission seating.

The next concert program will feature German composers Engelbert Humperdinck and Adelheid Wette's "Hänsel und Gretel," an abridged version of the 1893 fairy tale opera. It will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at St. Paul's UCC in Downers Grove, as well as a special performance at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Mayslake Hall in Oak Brook.
Concerto competition
The Sinfonietta Bel Canto is hosting its first concerto competition for young musicians on Sunday, Jan. 28. Up to two finalists in each of four categories will perform in the Sinfonietta Bel Canto concert at 3 p.m. at St. Paul's UCC Church in Downers Grove.
Categories include Junior Piano, Senior Piano, Winds/Brass, and Strings/Harp. Each of the category winners and the Audience Favorite will receive a monetary award.
Entrants can apply online at www.sinfoniettabelcanto.org, under the SBC Concerto tab. This includes all forms, guidelines, and payment button. A completed submission includes all authorization, fees, and video link. The submission deadline is Friday, Dec. 15.
