Pingree Grove community comes together for 5K run
Given all of the recent turmoil in Pingree Grove of late, it was nice to see the community come together for a 5K run over the past weekend.
There were 108 runners participating in the third charity 5K that the village organized with Cambridge Lakes Charter School and the Northern Kane Educational Group, a number that marked the biggest turn out ever, said Village President Wyman "Clint" Carey.
The event raised $1,400, which will go toward a volleyball court at the school.
Drew Smith, the school's physical education teacher, says the school hopes to arrange local volleyball tournaments.
In the meantime, please be on the look out for another 5K in Pingree Grove this fall.

Algonquin snowboarder wins another award: Kirby Kelly, the 15-year-old Algonquin snowboarder, just secured Dundee-Crown High School's amateur athlete of the year award for all of the accolades she scored on the slopes.
Over the past year, Kirby, a student at Dundee-Crown, won best trick at the United States of America Snowboard Association national competition and is now ranked third in youth women's half-pipe.
Kirby took the second spot in her division at the inaugural Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals, a competition that invited the best of the best amateur skiers and snowboarders to compete at Mount Snow Resort in West Dover, Vt.
"This is totally unexpected," Kirby said in a prepared statement. "I really want to thank my teachers and counselors for helping me with my travel schedule."
Kirby learned her craft right in Algonquin at Raging Buffalo Snowboard Park.
In the future, Kirby hopes to snowboard in the European Open in Switzerland in January and in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia.
