These agencies provide vital services in their own communities and throughout the Chicago area, including the North and Northwest Suburbs.
"We are a convenient resource for those in need of selling or donating home furnishings, as well as a great 'find' for those wanting to purchase high quality items, at good prices, for a deserving cause," said Sharon Kaczmarek, Shop & sales director at Village Treasure House.
Meet the current service agency grant recipients
The recent $109,000 grant funding represents a portion of projected total amount of financial support to service organizations to be announced by year-end 2023.
Staffed by over 100 dedicated volunteers, VTH proudly donates 100% of its profits to local agencies.
The current round of grant recipients includes these nonprofit agencies:
• Connections for the Homeless
• Erika's Lighthouse
• Family Promise North Shore
• Family Service Center
• Haven Youth and Family Services
• Hunger Resource Network
• Metropolitan Family Services
• Northfield Township Food Pantry
• Shelter, Inc.
• The Children's Advocacy Center
• The Harbour
• Wesley Child Care Center
• Wings: Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence
• Youth Services: Bringing Kids Hope
• YWCA Evanston/North Shore
Representatives of a few of these organizations commented on the importance of VTH funding to maintaining and growing their community service offerings.
Wesley Child Care Center: VTH is a "Pillar of Community Support."
Craig Solomon, executive director, Wesley Child Care Center, Glenview (located in the Glenview Methodist Church), characterizes VTH as a "hidden gem, a jewel in their support of our community."
He points out, "Agencies like us that have received their support tout their role in the community as essential to filling a gap in service funding needs."
"VTH has been monumental to supporting our Wesley Scholarship Assistance Program for families in financial need. Wesley's scholarship program supports those who meet designated profiles of need such as low income, emergency needs, loss of a family member, a parent becomes ill, job losses resulting in financial shortfalls in paying for quality school programs due to circumstances that were unforeseen," Solomon explained.
Hunger Resource Network: VTH Helps "Expand Footprint to Help Alleviate Hunger."
Since 2009, Hunger Resource Network (HRN), based in Northbrook, has distributed over 4 million pounds of food to soup kitchens, food pantries and shelters throughout Cook, Lake, and Kane Counties. Dan Jariabka founded the network with his wife, Linda.
"The value of VTH funding along with other groups, over the past few years, has helped us expand our footprint to help alleviate hunger among more than 80 food kitchens, food pantries and shelters throughout the Chicagol area,"said Kerry Smith, director of Development, HRN.
"Twice each year we distribute 120,000 pounds of chicken thanks to funding from various agencies including VTH and now it has just been increased to 132,000 pounds, including distribution to five more community agencies."
Hunger Resource Network hosts two "Community Outreach Day" events every year in April and November when frozen, packaged chickens are distributed to more than 80 community organizations.
The next Community Outreach Day will be held on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023 when there will also be a commemoration of U.S. military veterans.
Youth Services: VTH Helps "Provide a Safety Net for Those in Need"
There are four core values that guide Youth Services: Bringing Kids Hope: Trust, safety, connection, and compassion. For more than 20 years, VTH helped make these values a reality through its consistent financial support of services to deliver on this mission.
"Our mental health services, youth development and crisis response support, provide a safety net for those who need us the most," said Amy O'Leary, LCSW, executive director, Youth Services, based in Glenview. "As a result of VTH funding, we have been able to grow and evolve in meeting individual and group mental health needs throughout the past several years."
"VTH has been among our leading partner organizations supporting our fund-raising effort to sustain our therapy model of turning no one away based on ability to pay," O'Leary added.
"Even during the pandemic, VTH was still there for us with financial support so we can provide critical health services for youth and families, children and teens (ages 5 up to age 21)."
Mental health therapy needs run the range from children struggling with depression, anxiety, bullying and family issues such as divorce.
"We really value VTH not only for its financial support, but several VTH volunteers also volunteer at our agency. Some have helped with our holiday gift program, and other programs, and it is a pleasure to have this mutually beneficial collaboration with this really dedicated group of folks," O'Leary said.
