LWV Voter Guide for Oakton Community College Board
Elections for the Oakton Community College Board of Trustees will take place on April 2, 2019. Three of the eight board positions are up for election. Trustees serve for six-year terms.
The League of Women Voters has put together an online Voter Guide to help the public learn about each participating candidate's qualifications, reasons for seeking office and objectives during their tenure. Candidates for trustee are: Theresa Bashiri-Remetio, Robert A. Boron, Gail Bush, Allan H. Cohen, Alexandra Eidenberg, Kyle Frank, Richard A. Geline, Michele Hays, R. Razz Jenkins, Havee Makedon, Marie Lynn Toussaint, Cynthia E. Veremis and Wendy B. Yanow.
Oakton Community College District 535 is home to over 486,000 residents. Founded in 1969, Oakton is a two-year community college offering associate's degree programs and noncredit courses for the 16 municipalities located within the Oakton district: Des Plaines, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Golf, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northbrook, Northfield, Park Ridge, Rosemont, Skokie, Wilmette, Winnetka. District property taxes provide 45% of the college's annual revenues.
Students can earn an associate degree or a certificate from 80 areas of study and over 2,500 course offerings, ranging from health careers, science, and technology to business and liberal arts. Classes are offered in continuing education, training and workforce development as well as emeritus classes for older adults. Oakton also offers options for completing a GED or learning English as a Second Language.
In addition to campuses in Des Plaines and Skokie, Oakton also offers courses and programs at some 240 off-site locations throughout the community.
