Schaumburg Library is now fine free
A new policy at the Schaumburg Township District Library means no fines for borrowers, resulting from a vote on Monday, April 20, by the library's Board of Trustees.
"Fines create a barrier to accessing our materials, and our goal is to provide information and resources for our entire community, with minimal limitations," said Schaumburg Library Executive Director Annie Miskewitch.
This is not the first change Schaumburg Library has made to lessen the impact of fines on its operating budget. The library was already fine free for seniors and had implemented automatic renewals to keep patrons from incurring fines. Fines currently account for about 0.25 percent of the library's budget.
"The board is proud to support this move to be a fine-free library," said Schaumburg Library Board of Trustees President Anita Forte-Scott. "Thanks to this change, more than 1,350 of our patrons once again have access to our materials as we've forgiven the fines currently on their accounts. This includes more than 430 kids and teens and more than 490 low-income households."
