Dining out: Leona’s 75th anniversary, win doughnuts for life at new Stan’s in Naperville and more
Happy 75th!
Leona’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, a Chicago favorite that recently opened an outpost in suburban McHenry, is celebrating its 75th anniversary next week on Thursday, Aug. 14, with 75-cent personal pizzas for the first 75 VIP Rewards members at each location and free full-size pizzas for the first 75 guests 75 years old and older.
The first Leona’s was opened in 1950 in the Lakeview neighborhood by Leona Pianetto Molinaro Szemla and was known not just for its pizzas, but for innovations like branded delivery cars in the early 1950s. They now have locations in the West Loop, Irving Park, Lyons and McHenry.
More pizza news
Just in time for back-to-school, California Pizza Kitchen is making Mondays and Tuesdays $10 Pizza Days, offering guests four of its bestselling pizzas for $10 each.
The fan-favorite lineup includes the Original BBQ Chicken Pizza, pepperoni pizza, five cheese plus fresh tomato pizza, and the mushroom, pepperoni and sausage pizza.
The offer is available for dine in, takeout or delivery at participating locations with a minimum purchase of $20. To redeem the deal, mention “$10 Pizza Days” to your server, or use promo code “CPKPizza” when you order on cpk.com or the app.
There are suburban locations in Deer Park, Geneva, Northbrook, Oak Brook and Schaumburg.
Mmm, doughnuts
Early risers can receive a free T-shirt and a chance to win free doughnuts for life at the grand opening of the new Stan’s Donuts & Coffee in Naperville Saturday.
The new location in Block 59 at 408 S. Route 59 will kick off the festivities at 6 a.m. with the first 100 guests in line receiving a limited-edition Stan’s shirt.
Three lucky boxes of doughnuts won’t have regular doughnuts at all: One will include the Golden Donut, granting free doughnuts for life; one will hold a certificate for a KitchenAid Mixer; and a third will feature a framed print of artist Julia Hagens’ painting of Stan’s original Wicker Park shop.
The Naperville store is the first of two new locations debuting this summer and marks the 18th stand-alone location.
Prisoner and pasta
Maggiano’s Little Italy Naperville is teaming with The Prisoner Wine Company for an evening of hand-selected wines and curated dishes to match on Friday, Aug. 22.
The five-course meal starts with an opening act of charcuterie with Ruffino prosecco, followed by Chef’s Signature Ceasar served with The Prisoner chardonnay. Lobster Fra Diavolo with Saldo red zinfandel is next, followed by filet mignon with asparagus paired with The Prisoner red blend. New York-style cheesecake with fresh berries is served with a mini espresso martini for dessert.
Tickets are $100 per person. Reservations can be made on Eventbrite.
Brunch, booze and barks
You can make a forever friend during brunch Saturday as Fatpour Tap Works in Lincolnwood and PAWS Chicago team up for an adoption event Saturday, Aug. 9.
During their brunch hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the outdoor patio will transform into an adoption fair with puppies and adult dogs looking for a good home. Check out the website for details and reservations.
