Singles club for boomers

Being a mature single, whether through divorce or death, can be lonely and frustrating, and it's sometimes hard to meet others in the same situation.

That is one of the reasons why Jean Steffens, 56, of Crystal Lake, has started Baby Boomer Singles Club.

"Singles will travel miles and hours to meet others," Steffens said. "The craziest time was when another single friend and I went all the way to Milwaukee just to dance."

Steffens, a local Realtor who used to own a singles dance club, still went to other singles functions, where former customers would ask her to open another club.

She eventually decided to open "Baby Boomer Singles Club," a place for singles over age 45 to participate in social activities like wine tastings, restaurants and sports.

"Some people aren't dancers, so these other activities will fit their needs," Steffens said.

"I want to create any environment that is fun and a vehicle to meet others."

There are no membership fees, and participants can pick and choose their outings based on their schedules and interests.

The upcoming events will be singles dances at American Legion Hall, 1101 W. Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills, from 8 p.m. to midnight, Fridays, Nov. 30, Dec. 14 and 30.

Admission is $10. The event is non-smoking and dress requirement is no jeans or gym shoes.

Well-known DJ Scott Pastorino will play songs from the decades that Baby Boomers love to hear and dance to.

Raffle prizes include a hair makeover by Sassy Kathie of Island Lake and a restaurant gift certificate.

Other activities will be announced soon.
