Briefs: Hazardous waste collection
The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County will host a household hazardous waste collection from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today at the Metra train station lot, 75 E. Rt. 45 in Vernon Hills. Accepted materials include oil-based paints, motor oil, household cleaners, garden/lawn chemicals, paint remover, pesticides and driveway sealers. Fire extinguishers, latex paint, tires, fireworks and smoke detectors are among the items not accepted. Visit www.swalco.org or www.vernonhills.org for details.
Parks public hearing:
The Vernon Hills Park District will host a public hearing at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 to discuss issues with residents who may be impacted by future park district plans and developments. The hearing at the Laschen Community Center, 294 Evergreen Drive, involves a request for the district to consider installing aerators in Evergreen Lake to help prevent the growth of algae blooms. A second inquiry regarding future improvements to the park area along Deerpath Drive known as "Five Acres" also will be discussed.
An anti-drug message
In recognition of 2007 National Red Ribbon Week, Carmel Catholic High School has teamed up with Athletes Against Drugs to present an anti-drug student assembly Thursday. Speakers include Athletes Against Drugs founder Stedman Graham, former Bulls player Dickey Simpkins, NBC Channel 5 News anchor Art Norman, and Alicia Straughter, managing director of Athletes Against Drugs. The assembly will at 10 a.m. in Salvi Arena. Carmel Catholic High School has a zero-tolerance policy regarding alcohol and drugs. The school's preventative measures include: a Substance Abuse Committee chaired by the associate principal; Students Against Destructive Decisions; Operation Snowball, a national program that encourages healthy lifestyle choices; individual counseling by a licensed clinical social worker and guidance counselors who serve as an early intervention team for students at risk.
Meet with Bean Sunday
Constituents of U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean's 8th Congressional District will have a chance to voice concerns or give input to her on Sunday when she appears at area Jewel stores as part of the Congress @ Your Corner program. She's scheduled to appear at 8 a.m. Sunday at 4222 W. Elm St. in McHenry; 9 a.m. at 150 Main St. in Barrington; and 11 a.m. at 1069 N. Roselle Road in Hoffman Estates. Bean is a Democrat from Barrington. Her district runs from the Wisconsin state line south through parts of Lake, McHenry and northwestern Cook counties.
