Briefs: Bloomingdale trash pick-up

Bloomingdale residences with curbside trash collection scheduled for Wednesday through Friday may set out unlimited amounts of household trash in cans or bags at the curb. Appliances & furniture also will be picked up at no additional charge, but residents must call Allied Waste at (847) 429-7370 to arrange pick-up. Pick up of "construction-type" material is available at an additional cost. For Monday through Friday only, property damaged by flooding may be set out at the curb prior to the date of pick-up.

Roselle helps MDA

The Roselle Fire Department helped raise more than $4,500 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in July. Volunteers collected money at the intersection of Roselle Road and Irving Park Road for the Fill-The-Boot campaign. They raised more than double what they raised last year. The money will help staff clinics, purchase equipment, pay for children to attend summer camp and fund research to find a cure for muscular dystrophy.

Citizen police academy

The Carol Stream Police Department is looking for applicants for the fall session of its citizen police academy. The program is designed to provide those who live or work in Carol Stream an opportunity to learn more about the role and functions of police officers. Topics during the 11-week course include crime scene investigation, gang and drug enforcement, juvenile laws, firearms training and community policing. Carol Stream residents or employees within the village who are at least 18 years of age are encouraged to apply. There is no cost to participate. Ensemble seeks singers

Elmhurst Choral Union seeks additional singers for its Dec. 2 concert when it presents Daniel Pinkham's "Christmas Cantata," holiday selections and "Gershwin! A Concert Panorama." Roadside safety check

The Illinois State Police will conduct a roadside safety check Sept. 1 beginning at 7 p.m. along North Avenue near the I-355 southbound entrance. The safety check is funded through a federal grant administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Circus will benefit District 4

The Kelly Miller Circus will perform at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Green Meadows Shopping Center, Lake Street and Kennedy Drive. At about 9 a.m. Sept. 11, elephants will start erecting the big top and spectators are welcome. Advance tickets cost $9 for adults and $5 for children. At the door, tickets are $12 for adults and $6 children. Children younger than 2 are free. Funds raised will benefit The Addison District 4 Educational Foundation for Excellence, a not-for-profit organization. Last May, the foundation awarded nearly $8,000 in grants to teachers for programs and equipment. Tickets can be purchased at the Addison Park District Community Park, 120 Oak St. or Centennial Park, 1776 Centennial Place; Uncle Harry's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor, 1453 W.
