Briefs: REI coming to Schaumburg
Recreational Equipment Inc., the national retailing cooperative of outdoor gear and clothing better known as REI, will open a new store in Schaumburg at the former Tower Records site in Woodfield Commons on Golf Road. The 26,000-square-foot space, expected to open in November, will include a full-service bike shop and seasonal rentals like snowshoes and camping gear, company officials announced Wednesday. REI also plans to open a new store in Lincoln Park, joining existing Chicago-area sites in Oakbrook Terrace and Northbrook. As a cooperative, REI offers those who pay a one-time, $15 membership fee a share of profits based on members' annual purchases.
Free senior fair on Sept. 6
Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights will host a senior health fair from 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 6 at the Rolling Meadows Senior Center, 3705 Pheasant Drive. At the fair, there will be free health screenings and $25 cholesterol screenings. There will also be information from the Rolling Meadows Police Department on senior safety, Veterans Affairs benefits, state health insurance assistance program and Northwest Suburban High School District 214's travel club. There will also be tai chi, bingo and a free continental breakfast. Drive a BMW for charity
Test drive a BMW in Schaumburg today and the automaker will donate $1 for every mile driven to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Specially decorated BMWs will be available for test drives from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Patrick BMW, 700 E. Golf Road, and the test drives are free. This is the 11th year BMW has sponsored the nationwide fundraiser. The Ultimate Drive was at Motor Werks in Barrington earlier this week. Money raised supports breast cancer research, education, screening and community outreach.
Croquet deadline nears
Croquet anyone? Registration for adult and children's teams for the Des Plaines Public Library's Sept. 8 croquet tournament will close Friday. Teams will play croquet for fun and prizes, 1 to 5 p.m. at Central Rose Garden on Ashland Avenue across from Central School, with refreshments and live music. The public is also invited to watch the special event honoring the library's centennial. It's co-sponsored by the Des Plaines Park District and G. L. Hills Funeral Homes. The rain date is Sunday.
