Metra train hits empty car in Cary
A Cary man was able to get out of his trapped car Monday afternoon just before a Metra train crashed into the vehicle, police said.
No one was hurt in the incident.
The driver of the car, Angel Chavez of 455 Oriole Ave., told police he lost control of his car near the rail crossing at Three Oaks Road and ended up stuck on the tracks.
"He observed that a train was coming, so he bailed out of the car," Cary police Sgt. Jim Fillmore said.
The train, running on the Union Pacific Northwest District Line, hit the vehicle about 1:45 p.m.
The outbound train was delayed 40 minutes, while an inbound train was held up 25 minutes. There were no further delays, a Metra spokeswoman said.
Police rerouted traffic around the scene for less than an hour.
Police cited Chavez for driving too fast for conditions and driving without proof of insurance.
The train suffered minor cosmetic damage. The extent of the damage to the car was not clear.
