Briefs: Hundreds cited in state police initiative

Illinois State Police based out of Elgin issued 795 citations and made dozens of arrests last month during a Special Traffic Enforcement Patrols initiative. The initiative, run out of state police District 2 in Elgin, included stepped up traffic patrols in Kane, McHenry, DeKalb, DuPage and Lake counties. The arrests included 18 for driving on a suspended license, seven for drug possession, one for driving under the influence and seven on other criminal offenses. Troopers also issued 410 citations for seat belt violations and nine for child restraint violations.

Sheriff nabs one of 10 most wanted

McHenry County Sheriff's police, with an assist from the U.S. Marshal's Service and Lake County, nabbed one of the county's 10 most wanted on Dec. 3. Boen S. Rice, 21, of Spring Grove, had been wanted since mid-November on charges alleging he was operating a secret hallucinogenic mushroom growing operation inside his home. Sheriff's police say deputies discovered the operation Nov. 14 when responding to a report of shots fired at the residence. Rice, who faces three felony drug charges, was captured in Round Lake Park by members of the sheriff's Apprehension Unit.

Petitions available for District 300

Nominating petitions are available for residents of Community Unit District 300 who are interested in running for a seat on the school board. Three of seven seats are up for election in the spring: board Vice President Karen Roeckner, board Secretary Anne Miller and Mary Warren. Petitions are available between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the district's administration building, 300 Cleveland Ave., Carpentersville.
