Museum holiday exhibit open

Free Holiday Swim

Today is the last day for free holiday swims at YWCA of Elgin. It will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult. YWCA Elgin is at 220 E. Chicago St., Elgin. For details, call (847) 742-7930.

ECC to close for winter break

Elgin Community College will close its facilities on the main and Fountain Square campuses for the winter recess from Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 4. College offices reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Spring 16-week daytime and evening classes start Tuesday, Jan. 20. Twelve-week classes start Tuesday, Feb. 17. Eight-week classes begin Monday, March 16. For additional information, call the facilities rental office at (847) 931-3925.

Ready to run?

Nominating packets for people interested in running for a seat on the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District board are now available. The election, to be held in April, will fill a pair of trustee slots - one a six-year term and the other a two-year term. Packets are available at the district office, 1020 W. Algonquin Road.

Staying warm

When it is bitterly cold outside, there are a number of places Elgin residents can turn to, when it comes to staying warm. The Elgin police station's lobby is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week. People can also turn to the following shelters: PADS of Elgin and the Wayside Center, both at 1730 Berkley St. and the Vineyard, 205 Fulton St., which offers a soup kitchen every night at different sites throughout the city.
