Briefs: Breakfast with Santa

Carpentersville VFW Post 5915 will have a special guest during its monthly breakfast at the post on Sunday, Dec. 14. Santa and his favorite elves will stop by. The breakfast runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the post, 301 Lake Marian Road. While waiting for your made to order hot breakfast, get a free picture with Santa. The Carpentersville VFW Post 5915 opens every month for breakfast on the second Sunday of the month. It's open to the public. Toys Needed for Community Toy Giveaway

For more than 20 years the Elgin Community Holiday Toy Giveaway, a community sponsored event, has collected and distributed more than 5,000 toys & gifts to 2,500 children from more than 900 families in Elgin and South Elgin. Organizers are anticipating the need for even more gifts this year. New toys or monetary donations to purchase toys are acceptable; and a list of toys is available on the Community Crisis Center website at www.crisiscenter.org . Monetary donations can be sent to the Community Crisis Center, P.O. Box 1390, Elgin, IL 60121-1390; designate Toy Giveaway in the memo field. Toys can be dropped off at three locations: Grand Victoria Casino, Elgin Township Office, or Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Elgin. This year's toy giveaway is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. For details, call Lea at (847) 742-4088.

Petitions available for District 158

Nominating petitions are available for residents of Huntley Unit District 158 interested in running for a seat on the school board. Five of seven seats will be up for election in spring 2009: board President Shawn Green, board Vice President Tony Quagliano, board Secretary Kim Skaja, Larry Snow and Mike Skala. Petitions can be picked up from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on business days at the district offices, 650 Academic Dr., Algonquin. Petitions must be filed between 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, and 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26. Call (847) 659-6158.
