Briefs: Hunters lead to school scare
Students at four schools in Community Unit District 300 got a scare Friday morning after shots were fired near Dundee-Crown High School, according to the district. The shots were fired by duck hunters hunting legally just north of Carpentersville, police said. The shots were reported around 7:30 a.m., just as students were arriving at the high school. Dundee-Crown staff pulled students inside and were preparing for a lockdown when police informed them there was no danger, according to District 300. The district sent an alert to parents around 8:15 a.m. to notify them of the situation.
ECC's literary mag wins award:
Spire, Elgin Community College's student literary magazine, received central division first place in the 2008 literary magazine competition sponsored by the Community College Humanities Association. The award will be presented at the central region conference Nov. 13-15 in Omaha, Neb. This is the first honor awarded to Spire in its 34-year history. The magazine's 2007-2008 issue, published last spring, was co-edited by Spartan Design Club students and creative writing scholarship recipients.
Petitions available for District 300:
Nominating petitions are available for residents of Community Unit District 300 who are interested in running for a seat on the school board. Three of seven seats are up for election in the spring: board Vice President Karen Roeckner, board Secretary Anne Miller and Mary Warren. Petitions are available between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the district's administration building, 300 Cleveland Ave., Carpentersville. Petitions must be filed between Tuesday, Jan. 20 and Monday, Jan. 26 at the administration building. Call (847) 551-8344.
High school hosts variety show:
The Huntley Fine Arts Boosters are hosting their ninth annual variety show. The show features more than 50 middle school and high school students, as well as performers from the community. The show will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Huntley High School, 13719 Harmony Road. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors; they are $7 for adults.
