Briefs: Brass quintet in Wheaton

West Chicago earns award:

West Chicago received the Silver Circle Award from City-County Communications and Marketing Association, a national organization that assists local governments in communicating with residents. The city was honored for outstanding achievement in the printed publications category for its resident newsletter, Window to West Chicago. The city recently redesigned the bimonthly newsletter with a more reader-friendly format that resembles a hometown magazine.

Addison holiday giving:

Addison Community Switchboard's 2008 Christmas Program is collecting food and creating gift baskets for 260 needy families and about 50 seniors in Addison. Residents may help by getting gift tags, which are now available at Addison Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza. Nonperishable food and gifts must be dropped off by Dec. 2 at the sorting site, Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 960 W. Army Trail Blvd., Addison. Gifts will be distributed Dec. 8. School offers shadow days

All Saints Catholic Academy in Naperville, serving preschool through eighth grades, is offering prospective students an opportunity to shadow for a half day. Students currently in fifth and sixth grades particularly are encouraged to visit. Shadow days must be scheduled in advance and will start in January. Now in its fourth year of operation, the school is sponsored by the parishes of St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Margaret Mary and St. Thomas the Apostle. West Chicago coyote video

To ease concerns about coyote sightings in West Chicago, the city has produced an educational video, "The Urban Coyote," in cooperation with the Cook County, Illinois Animal Control and the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation. It's airing this month on West Chicago's local access station, Channel 17, at 8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. Saturdays. The video is also online at westchicago.org.
