Briefs: Bloomingdale house fire

Fire officials deemed a home on the 200 block of Leslie Lane in Bloomingdale uninhabitable after a Thursday afternoon fire caused about $175,000 in damages to the building. No one was injured. Batallion Chief Walter Beahan said the blaze started around 1 p.m. in a second-floor bedroom, but the cause is still under investigation. Rescue workers from Bloomingdale, Wheaton and Roselle fire departments, along with members of the Carol Stream and Glenside fire protection districts, were on the scene for approximately three hours extinguishing flames and cleaning debris.

Prosecutor recognized for anti-drug efforts

Assistant State's Attorney Paul Marchese was honored Thursday for his work on a three-month undercover narcotics investigation in northern DuPage County dubbed "Operation Scratch Off," that netted about two dozen arrests, three pounds of cocaine, six cars, and seven firearms. Marchese was recognized by leaders of drug enforcement groups across Illinois during an annual awards luncheon in East Peoria. His boss, State's Attorney Joe Birkett, called Marchese an "outstanding prosecutor" whose efforts have made DuPage County "a safer place for us and our children."

Scrap-n-Stamp Saturday

Alleluia! Lutheran Church in Naperville is holding its biannual Scrap-n-Stamp for charity from 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday, Oct. 11, at the church, 4055 S. Book Road, Naperville. This year's event will raise funds for the Breast Cancer Network of Strength Illinois. Wheaton police report two burglaries:

Wheaton police are asking residents in the neighborhoods around Seven Gables Park to keep an eye out for burglars who have hit two homes there in the past three weeks. Both burglaries happened between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. One was reported in the 1700 block of South Thompson Drive on Sept. 16. The other burglary happened in the 100 block of Danada Drive on Oct. 7. Rear or side doors on each of the residences were forced open. Anyone with information is urged to call Wheaton police Cmdr. Joseph Eversole at (630) 260-2161.

Lisle investigates burglaries:

Lisle police are investigating a series of residential burglaries in the area south of Ogden Avenue, east of Main Street, and north of Division Street. Three burglaries were reported to Lisle police on Sept. 26. Each of these incidents occurred after midnight, and included items being removed from the house by an unknown suspect. Two more residential burglaries occurred between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Tuesday one of which was north of Ogden near Yackley. Anyone with information regarding these cases, is encouraged to contact the Lisle Police Department at (630) 271 4200.

Dist. 94 board vacancies:

Nominating petition forms for the April 7 school board election in Community High School District 94 are available. Four seats on the seven-member board are up for election. Candidates will serve a four-year term. Forms may be picked up from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at 326 Joliet St., West Chicago. A candidate's petition must be filed in the same office no earlier than 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 and no later than 5 p.m. Jan. 26. Candidates' names will appear on the election ballot in the order in which the nominating petitions are received. To be eligible to serve, a school board candidate must be registered to vote, a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old and a resident of district for at least one year before the election.
