Marine Corps Sgt. Dean P. Kevorkian, son of Cary Kevorkian of Streamwood reported for duty at Marine Corps Recruiting Station, St. Louis, Mo. Kevorkian, a 2000 graduate of Schaumburg High School, joined the Marine Corps in January 2000.

• Marine Corps Reserve Lance Cpl. Andrew L. Hindal, son of Deborah L. and Christopher L. Hindal of Schaumburg, completed the predeployment exercise Mojave Viper at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif., while assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, Harrisburg, Pa.

Hindal's unit is comprised of approximately 1, 100 reserve and active-duty Marines and sailors who are scheduled to deploy to Iraq in support of the Global War on Terror and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Mojave Viper is a 30-day training exercise that helps service members hone skills in both combined-arms and counter-insurgency operations. The primary mission of Hindal's unit when deployed to Iraq will be base security and other nation-building civil affairs operations. This will be 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines' third deployment since 2002.

Hindal is a 2000 graduate of Evangelical Christian School of Fort Myers, Fla. and joined the Marine Corps Reserve in January 2007.

• Army Pvt. Debra S. Jones graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Jones is the sister of Irin Berry of Hoffman Estates. In 1999, the private graduated from West Aurora High School.

• Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Charles M. Shortridge graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Shortridge, who earned distinction as an honor graduate, is the son of Mary Shortridge of Schaumburg and a 2005 graduate of Schaumburg High School.

• Elliott L. Snelgrove of Barrington graduated from Officers' Candidate School at the Marine training base, Quantico, Va., in August. The 10-week program tests physical and intellectual readiness to become a Marine officer. Snelgrove has accepted an aviation contract with the Marines. Following his graduation from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Fla., in June 2009, he will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and proceed to The Basic School for Marines at Quantico. He is a 2005 graduate of Barrington High School.
