DuPage Co. briefs
Grand jury indictments:
Two men are expected to plead innocent Monday in unrelated high-profile DuPage County criminal cases. Fredrick V. Griffin, 29, of Bellwood, was charged with failure to report an accident involving death and reckless homicide for a July 24 incident in Addison in which he is accused of intentionally running over a motorcyclist after a traffic altercation. The man later died. In another case, 32-year-old Adrian Reyes-Gutierrez, of Westmont, will be arraigned on criminal sexual assault charges on suspicion he molested an 18-year-old girl during a July 28 party in Downers Grove. A grand jury indicted both men this week.
Naperville memorial broken into:
Naperville police are looking for information regarding a theft from the Sept. 11 Memorial located along the Riverwalk behind city hall, 400 S. Eagle St. Police say someone broke the seal to the plexiglass covering and removed one of the cement pieces sometime between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. There is a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (630) 420-6006. Callers may remain anonymous.
Film festival seeks volunteers:
Volunteers are needed to participate in a variety of events for the Naperville Independent Film Festival from Sept. 24-27. Interested persons are needed to work on committees before the event. Anyone interested in volunteering should e-mail volunteer@naperfilm.org or use the volunteer form on the Web site. In addition, two dozen volunteer photographers and videographers are needed to help record events throughout the festival; contact Edmond Coisson at edmondcoisson@yahoo.com.
County celebrates center:
The DuPage County Convalescent Center has slated a series of activities throughout the next week to celebrate its 120th anniversary. The activities will take place throughout the county. The events include re-enactments of life in the 1890s at Kline Creek Farm in Winfield, displays of war vehicles and histories at Cantigny Park, a picnic and a concert. The events honor the history of the convalescent center that was founded in 1888 as the County Alms House serving the indigent. It became a nursing facility in the 1930s. Rabid bats found:
The DuPage County Health Department is reporting three rabid bats have been identified in the county. The bats were disposed of, but health department officials are warning residents to remain vigilant as this is the time of the year when rabid bats are most prevalent. More than 50 rabid bats have been located this year in the state. Rabies is a disease that affects the central nervous system and can be fatal to humans if contracted. If anyone finds a sick bat, they are urged to call DuPage Animal Care and Control at (630) 407-2800.
