Briefs: Man indicted for escape

A 25-year-old Bensenville man is wanted on a warrant after police said he failed to show up at the DuPage County jail, where he was supposed to serve a 60-day term for aggravated drunken driving. Eladio Cifuentes, whose last known address is 112 Bridget Court, Apt. 1B, was sentenced to the jail term and two years' probation after he pleaded guilty earlier this year. The warrant was issued after he failed to turn himself in on the agreed Feb. 1 date. A DuPage County grand jury indicted him on felony escape charges this week.

Bensenville keeps up fight

Lawyers for Bensenville will return to court Monday to ask DuPage Circuit Judge Kenneth Popejoy to stay his order allowing Chicago to begin the demolition of more than 600 homes and commercial properties on the village's east side. The judge issued a ruling Thursday lifting his previous preliminary injunction after he said environmental tests showed the proposed razing doesn't pose a public health risk. Bensenville attorneys are seeking the stay while they appeal the ruling to a higher court. Meanwhile, Chicago officials said they will begin predemolition work within the next several weeks. All but a dozen or so families have sold their homes to Chicago.
