Hampshire downs St. Edward

The St. Edward wrestling team won more of the matches that were actually wrestled Tuesday evening against Hampshire.

Unfortunately for the Green Wave, they also had to forfeit six weight matches as the Whip-Purs won the nonconference dual meet, 54-30.

"(Forfeits) pretty much kill you," St. Edward coach Shane Kottkamp said.

All seven matches ended in a fall and none went to a third period.

The Green Wave won four of those matches. Dan Miller pinned Mike Krach in 2:37 in the 130-pound match for St. Edward's first points of the meet. After three consecutive Green Wave forfeits, St. Edward won the next three matches.

Juniors Jon Godfrey (152 in 1:21), Dan Duffy (160 in 1:45) and Price Davis (171 in 1:39) all recorded falls.

"They are the core of our team right now, along with Shane Finnane," Kottkamp said. "Those are the guys we look to to score points."

Godfrey is wrestling at 152 pounds, thanks to some extra pounds he picked up during the football season. He expects to get back down to his wrestling weight of 140 pounds before the weight-class limits are established for the IHSA postseason by Jan. 30.

"I've been in sectionals by freshman and sophomore years and hope to make it state this year," Godfrey said.

Hampshire, which had to forfeit one weight class, won three matches. Tyler Espino pinned Sean Richmond as the first-period buzzer was about to sound at 109 pounds. Cody Kleiser (119) and Glen Buckwinkler (215) also won by falls.

"Win, lose or draw, we're learning," Whip-Purs coach Terry Wilkinson said. "Even in defeat, we're learning. When we make mistakes, we're learning for those mistakes. Hopefully we it comes time for regionals, we have a chance to have some of these guys to move along to sectionals."
