Briefs: Proton center plans OK'd

The West Chicago City Council has approved final plans for Northern Illinois University to build a $159 million proton cancer therapy center in the city's DuPage National Technology Park. University officials from the DeKalb school will join state and local officials Thursday for a groundbreaking at the site of the facility, which is expected to be the first such proton cancer treatment center in the state. Only five such facilities, which use proton beams rather than standard radiation to treat a variety of cancers, exist in the country.

Lisle trustee resigns

Lisle Trustee Tom Frey will step down from his seat effective July 2, officials announced Tuesday. Frey, who has served on the village board since 2001, is in the final year of his second term. Officials said he is moving to Keokuk, Iowa. Prior to being elected to the village board, Frey served on the Lisle Park District board from 1985 to 1994 and again from 1997 to 2001. Monday was his last village board meeting.

New administrator named

Veteran educator Jay Strang will become Indian Prairie Unit District 204's assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction beginning July 1, officials announced Tuesday. Strang, who has 20 years experience in the field, has served as the district's director of building operations since 2006. He replaces Kathy Duncan, who recently accepted a job as an elementary school principal in Naperville Unit District 203. Strang began his teaching career at Johnson Elementary School in Aurora in 1988. Two years later he started teaching at District 204's Brookdale Elementary. He later served as dean of students at Gregory Middle School and assistant principal at Crone Middle School. In 1999, he was appointed principal at Still Middle School.

Concert in Warrenville

Spoken Four, a cover band comprised of four Chicago musicians, is scheduled to perform a free show at 7 p.m. today at Warrenville's Bob Walters Commons between city hall and Warrenville Public Library, 28W751 Stafford Place. The event is part of the "Concerts on the Commons" series presented by the library with the cooperation of the Warrenville Park District.

Sex offender sent to jail:

A Rolling Meadows man admitted this week driving to Winfield for a sexual tryst with a 15-year-old girl he had chatted with on the Internet.

The girl turned out to be an uncover police officer. Martin Freedberg, 54, was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years and serve 30 months' probation. He pleaded guilty Monday to indecent solicitation of a child charges. Police said he traveled March 17 to Wynwood Park in Winfield to have sex with a minor girl. Freedberg also was sentenced to serve 180 days in jail. Authorities said he was a referee for several Northwest suburban schools.
