Briefs: Benefit honors NIU victim

Van's Frozen Custard, 300 N. Main St., Carpentersville, will hold a fundraiser today to benefit a scholarship fund in the name of Ryanne Mace, a Carpentersville resident killed in the February shootings at Northern Illinois University. Proceeds from all sales will go to the Ryanne Mace Memorial Scholarship Fund for graduate students of clinical psychology.

Lay old flags to rest

AMVETS and American Legion members will host a flag incineration ceremony, according to the U.S. flag code, at noon today. The Flag Day event will be held at Veterans Park on Route 14 in Cary. The public is welcome to drop off retired flags and view the ceremony. Other drop-off locations are Algonquin Township, 3702 Route 14, Crystal Lake; and Fox River Grove Fire Station 2 at 400 Lucille Ave., across the street from village hall. Call Cmdr. Old Glory to be honored

Carpentersville will hold a Flag Day ceremony at 10 a.m. today at the Veterans' Garden in Carpenter Park in observance of the 1777 adoption of the American flag.

Church Dadfest upcoming

Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington will host its annual Dadfest car show today and Sunday. Unique and exotic cars, motor homes, motorcycles, cigarette boats and more will be on display. The Rockin' Fenderskirts will play '60s and '70s music. The fest takes place after the 5:30 p.m. worship service today and after the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services Sunday. Admission is free. Dadfest is sponsored by the church's C.A.R.S.
