Briefs: Pedestrian killed by train

A Metra train struck and killed a man about 6:45 a.m. Friday in Wheaton. Police say the man intentionally stepped in front of the westbound train near the train crossing at Liberty and Front streets. The investigation resulted in a short delay of train traffic.

Aurora road closures

Weather permitting, Jackson Street will be closed to through traffic at North Avenue in Aurora starting at 7 a.m. Monday. The road will remained closed through June 13 to accommodate construction activity. Detour routes will be marked for motorists. Crews will be installing a new water main in the intersection to facilitate the future installation of new sewer. This infrastructure improvement is part of a larger project designed to alleviate sewer backups and improve overall drainage in the area.

Summer nutrition project

The Carol Stream-based Humanitarian Service Project is seeking donations to help pay for its "Feed the Kids Project", which will provide 290 children living in DuPage County with healthy food all summer long. The goal of the project is to provide a monthly delivery of 250 pounds of fresh produce, frozen meat, paper products, and nonperishable food items to 90 families. The agency still needs to raise $7,000 to fulfill the budget for the summer program. Warrenville garden contest

Warrenville residents are invited to participate in the city's third annual garden contest. The deadline to participate in the free contest is June 15. Judging will begin in mid-July. Entrants will be judged in one of four categories. Following the judging, all entrants will be invited to the Garden Contest Awards Event with refreshments and lots of garden discussion. Winners will be presented with certificates and prizes donated by local businesses and organizations. Community input meetings

Residents living within the Carol Stream Park District boundaries are invited to participate in three upcoming public input meetings being held to help the district set direction for the future. Dist. 7 preschool screening

Wood Dale School District 7 will be conducting preschool screening for children ages 3 to 5 on Wednesday and June 18. Carol Stream gets grant

The village of Carol Stream has received a $3,155 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to install energy-efficient lighting in all police department facilities. The upgrade will reduce the energy demand of the police department by more than 180 percent, village officials said.

Coffee with the cops

Glen Ellyn police will sponsor Coffee with the Cops at 8 a.m. today on the second floor of the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St. Police say the intent is for residents to come to an informal setting to get answers about police-related issues. Chief Phil Norton, Deputy Chief Bill Holmer and others will be available for about two hours to answer questions or discuss topics. For details, call (630) 469-1187.

Y offers 'BodyWorks'

Parents of girls ages 8-12 can meet with peers to discuss how to help the girls become healthy and strong women through a program offered by Heritage Group YMCA and Edward Hospital. BodyWorks, developed by the Office of Women's Health U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services, helps parents improve family eating and exercise habits. The free, eight-week program meets from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. June 18 to Aug. 6 at Fry Family YMCA, 2120 W. 95th St., Naperville. Girls are invited to the July 9, July 23 and Aug. 6 sessions. Child care will be provided for children ages 9 and under. Participants receive a BodyWorks toolkit, including publications, manuals, recipes, food and fitness journals, and a teen-oriented magazine.
