Briefs: MCC buys Gilger land
McHenry County College this week completed the $3.8 million purchase of nearby land known as the Gilger Property. The 56.7-acre purchase brings the school's total land mass to 169 acres. Officials said they bought the land to ensure MCC remains in its existing location. In March, the Crystal Lake City Council said MCC could build on 50 percent of its current campus and the new property.
Get rid of old electronics
West Dundee will host an electronic waste collection program from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the West Dundee public works facility, 900 Angle Tarn. Acceptable items include radios, televisions, VCRs, computers and peripherals. White goods such as refrigerators and stoves will not be accepted. Call (847) 551-3815.
Derby scholarship party
A Kentucky Derby party, to raise funds for the Ruth Tofanelli and Barb Lachel Scholarship Fund at Elgin Academy, will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at The Anvil Club, 309 Meier St. in East Dundee. The event will include appetizers and desserts, a derby raffle, bingo and hat contest and large-screen televisions to view the preliminary activities and the Run for the Roses. The cost is $50 per person. The fund, which honors two Fox Valley educators, makes it possible for talented students to attend the independent college-preparatory school in Elgin. Historic trial, part deux
An 1858 trial that pitted a former school treasurer against a bank owner over tax receipts for a local school district will be re-enacted in the old Kane County Courthouse in downtown Geneva. The historic case will be tried again at 7 p.m. tonight with modern-day attorneys wearing period costumes. The event, in Courtroom 340 of the courthouse at 100 S. Third St., will be presided by Chief Judge Don Hudson. The trial is part of the Kane County Bar Association's 150th anniversary celebration. Call (630) 762-1915.
