Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department --
• Try It Out! Not sure if you or your child will enjoy one of the classes offered through the Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department? Come out to the village hall amphitheater at 11 a.m. Friday for free samples of some of the summer programs.
• Sand Castle contest. Join the throngs on opening day, Saturday, at Indian Trail Beach, 228 Indian Trail, for the annual sand castle building contest from 1 to 2 p.m. There is no fee to enter and prizes will be awarded for both first and second place.
South Elgin Parks and Recreation --
• Father/Son Kane County Cougars Game. Enjoy an evening at the ballpark with your son. Price includes game tickets, transporation, and parking. Trip is June 5, leaving the Municipal Annex at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $30 for residents and $36 for nonresidents per couple. Each additional child is $13. Registration deadline is May 29.
Youth
Cary Park District --
• Sporttime Introduce your toddler to a variety of sports including basketball, soccer, baseball and obstacle courses. Children learn new skills, improve hand-eye coordination, develop self-esteem, and release energy.
Class is for children ages 4 to 5 years of age and meets from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Thursdays, June 12-July 24 at the Community Center. Registration is $42; nonresident is $63.
Tweens
• Yoga for Tweens: Increase your strength, flexibility and energy, and improve your body awareness, balance and coordination in a non-competitive environment. This program will cover yoga postures as well as breathing and relaxation exercises to balance the body and mind and improve overall health.
Class is for tweens, ages 9 to 13, and meets from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays, June 6-27 at the Community Center. Registration is $48; nonresident fee is $72.
Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department --
• Beginner Baton Twirling: Participants will be guided through basic twirling skills and light dance steps by instructor Nicole Hendricks, former Miss Majorette of Illinois and America. The 5- to 8-year-old class meets from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesdays beginning June 3. The class for 9- to 13-year-old youth meets from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Resident fee is $60; nonresident fee $70. There also is a materials fee due to the instructor on the first day of class -- $55 for performance team or $20 for basic instruction only.
• Hershey's Track & Field Game Day: Join in the fun beginning at 10 a.m. June 7 for the Hershey's Track & Field Game Day. This event, held at Lundahl Middle School, 560 Nash Road, Crystal Lake, is all about introducing children to physical fitness through fun, healthy activities like running, jumping and throwing.
This event is free, however, pre-registration is required and must be received by June 4. No race-day registration will be accepted.

South Elgin Parks and Recreation --
• Tot Soccer Fun begins June 3 at Concord Park Fields. Cost is $40 the residents and $45 for nonresidents. Today is the registration deadline.
• In Young Einsteins, children will learn something new about science and participate in an experiment. Class is for chidlren ages 3 to 5 and is held from 9 to 9:40 a.m. beginning Wednesday, June 4 at the Municipal Annex. Cost is $35 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Friday.
• Bugs, Slugs & More… is for 3- to 5-year-olds who love creepy little critters. Each week there is an activity with a creepy critter and a craft along with games and songs. The next class runs from 9:50 to 10:30 a.m. beginning June 5 at the Municipal Annex. Cost is $35 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. Today is the registration deadline.
• Alphabet Adventures is an exciting new class to help your young one learn the ABC's. There will be weekly games, crafts, and fun adventures while learning. Weather permitting, class will go outside during class time. This class is for 3- to 5-year-olds and is from 9 to 9:40 a.m. beginning June 5 at the Municipal Annex. Cost is $35 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. Today is the registration deadline.
• Kids & Kritters sessions are interactive animal encounters where participants, ages 6-8, will learn about animals, engage in hands-on activities with shelter residents, and have fun. Each week a new topic will be explored. The first session is Canine and Feline Communication from 2 to 3:30 p.m. June 6 at the Municipal Annex. The cost is $7 for residents and $10 for nonresidents.
The registration deadline is Friday.
• Fish & Find allows participants to enjoy the great outdoors with fishing and hiking at East Avenue Park in South Elgin. Come down and catch the big one, go hiking and find those creepy critters. After all that nature adventure, enjoy a snack at the park.
This class is for kids ages 6-10 years old. The class is held on Thursday and begins June 5 from 11 to 11:50 a.m. at East Avenue Park, 325 East Ave. Cost is $35 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. The registration deadline is today.
Adults
South Elgin Parks and Recreation --
• Grocery Shopping Tours will help those who are befuddled by food label ingredients and bewildered by marketing gimmicks and fancy packaging. Fitness and nutrition expert Merlin Hahn will give participants a healthy grocery list. Store locations will be given at time of registration. Sessions are scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m., June 3, 10 and 17. Cost per session is $33 for residents and $40 for nonresidents.
• Guiltless Lunching helps participants to select the most healthy and nutritious meals as well as guiltless dining out experience. Each week the group will select a local dining establishment. Restaurant schedule will be given upon registration. Bring money for food expenses; food will be billed at a discounted rate. A guide to assist in healthy and tasty menu choices is included. Classes will be held from noon to 1 p.m. today and, June 3, 10 and 17. Cost per class is $33 for residents and $40 for nonresidents.
Seniors
Cary Park District, Kraus Senior Center --
• Poker Club 9 a.m. to noon, every Tuesday and Thursday in June.
• Craft Club 9 to 11 a.m. select Fridays in June (6, 20, 27). Share ideas and either lead or participate in a variety of craft projects. The cost of supplies will vary.
• Bingo noon to 2:30 p.m. select Fridays in June (6, 20, 27).
• Exercise 10:30 to 11 a.m. select Fridays in June (6, 20, 27) Free exercise to a video created especially for Kraus Senior Center. Participants work at their own pace through the video using a variety of movements.
• Bridge Club noon to 2:30 p.m. select Fridays in June (6, 20, 27). And 6 to 9 p.m. select Thursdays in June (12, 26)
• Canasta & Pinochle Clubs 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. select Thursdays in June (12, 26)
• Glee Club 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday in June (3, 10, 17, 24).
• Garden Party Fashion Show & Breakfast 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 13 Fee is $15. The Kraus Senior Center plays host to the 2008 Annual Fashion Show. Senior Center models will present all the latest colors and designs as featured by Dress Barn, S&K Menswear and A L'Amour Bridal Shop. Enjoy fashions, food and door prizes in a garden party setting. Breakfast will be catered by Coleman's.
• Lincoln Park Conservatory Trip 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 19. Fee is $37/$41 A "paradise under glass" describes the three acres of conservatory and botanical gardens that provide a haven in the heart of Lincoln Park. With its four display houses, Palm House, Fern Room Orchid House and Show Room, the conservatory is always green and lush. Tour the conservatory on your own and afterward lunch at the Cheesecake Factory Restaurant. Return time is approximate. Lunch is self-pay.
• Men's Shuffleboard 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 5. The program is free; registration is required.
• Garage Sailing 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 27. Fee is $5/$6. "Sail" through local garage sales in search of great finds. Travel in the comfort of an air-conditioned bus with plenty of room for treasures. Half-way through the group will stop for lunch. Lunch is self-pay. Return time is approximate.
