Wrap: Fremd, Barrington pick up decisive wins

Fremd rebounded from its worst loss of the season with its biggest victory Friday.

After getting shutout for the time Thursday, Nick Addison hit 2 homers and Tyler Gregory homered as Fremd had 20 hits and rolled to an 18-4 Mid-Suburban League crossover baseball victory in 5 innings at Hersey.

Fremd (11-5, 6-4) and Barrington (11-9, 6-4) pulled within 2 games of rained-out Schaumburg in the West.

"We talked about having to have better focus when were in the field defensively and on the bench," said Fremd coach Chris Piggott. "They responded well. Right from the start they were focused and into the game."

Gregory's 2-run homer capped a 5-run first. Fremd blew open a 7-3 game with 4 runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth for the most runs it has scored this season.

"Obviously it's a little different when you score 5 runs in the first because it helps to get you a little loose," Piggott said, "and it makes it more fun than when you're down 5 runs like we were (in Thursday's 13-0 loss to Rolling Meadows."

Addison was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, Jason Ford was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and shortstop Ryan Shober was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Mike Tauchman and Anthony Concialdi had 2 hits apiece.

Fremd had 5 errors against Meadows but committed only one miscue behind winner Kyle Bahnick.

"Shober made some really nice plays and we made all the routine plays," Piggott said.

Fremd is scheduled to visit Wheeling in an MSL crossover at 11 a.m. today and hosts Schaumburg at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Barrington 10, BG 3 (6 inn.) Gus Handler capped a 9-run second inning for the host Broncos by hitting a 3-run homer as Barrington rolled in an MSL crossover shortened to 6 innings by rain.

Jack Golek hit a solo homer and finished 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI for Barrington (11-9, 6-4). Tim Conroy doubled and had 3 hits, and Johnny Day and Russ Zeisloft both had 2 hits.

In his first varsity appearance, sophomore left-hander Robby McDonnell started for Barrington and struck out eight with 4 hits in 5 innings.

Buffalo Grove (7-10, 3-8) lost its fourth straight.

Four MSL games were postponed because of weather. Wheeling at Schaumburg, Prospect at Hoffman Estates and Rolling Meadows at Palatine will be made up Tuesday and Elk Grove at Conant will be made up Thursday.
