Briefs: GED graduations

The Adult Basic Education Center at Elgin Community College, in conjunction with Elgin Area School District U-46, will hold a graduation for English as a Second Language and General Education Development programs at 7:30 tonight in the Visual and Performing Arts Center's Blizzard Theatre on 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. A total of 100 students, 50 each from ECC and District U-46, earned their GEDs this year.

Eyes in the skies

Illinois State Police used aircraft to issue 22 tickets and five written warnings Friday in a sting that targeted speeding drivers in Kane County, authorities said Monday. The air patrols, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Randall Road between Crane and Silver Glen roads, were the first in Kane County so far this year, police said. Speeding drivers were located by aircraft and stopped by waiting troopers. Additional stings are planned throughout the summer in Kane and DeKalb counties. Also, state troopers in patrol cars conducted an anti-speeding blitz Saturday along Route 173 between the McHenry County line to Zion in Lake County. The sting resulted in 309 arrests and 103 written warnings, police said.

School board vacancy

School officials in West Chicago Elementary District 33 are looking for candidates for an open school board position. The vacant seat is an 11-month term. Interested applicants can pick up an information packet at the district offices, 312 E. Forest Ave., and submit a letter of interest by May 30 to the attention of school board President Dave Barclay. Richard Marx in concert

Pop singer Richard Marx is scheduled to perform an acoustic concert featuring Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon Saturday at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. Marx became an international star in the late 1980s with the No. 1 hit "Right Here Waiting for You" and other chart-topping pop songs. Caruso concert May 29

The 2008 Tyler Caruso Memorial Concert is planned for 7 p.m. May 29 at Lincoln Park along West Main Street, between Fourth and Fifth streets, in St. Charles. Organized by students at St. Charles East and North high schools, the free concert aims to honor Caruso, an East student who died of an apparent cardiac arrest on July 14, 2002, while raising money for scholarships in his name. Geneva chamber golf

The Gamblers Run Golf Outing is June 2 at Eagle Brook Country Club, 2200 Fargo Blvd., Geneva.
