ECC baseball splits twinbill with Moraine
The Elgin Community College baseball team split an ISCC doubleheader with Moraine Valley Saturday, winning Game 1 of the doubleheader 16-5 before dropping the back end by a score of 1-0.
Jim Vancyckle (5-1) was on the bump for the early win allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while fanning 4 batters. Collecting 15 hits, the Spartans were led at the plate by Bryan Mason (3-for-3, 6 RBI), Greg Stolzenburg (2-for-5), Ben Vincent (2-for-2), Matt Revelle (2-for-4) and Kyle Standridge (2-for-4).
Bob Diebold suffered the Game 2 loss. Matt Wietlispach led the Spartans offensively going 2-for-3.
College baseball
Judson splits with St. Francis: In Game 1 Judson (14-20, 11-7) fell to USF 3-0. After four innings of scoreless play, USF scored 3 runs in back-to-back innings with two in the fifth and one in the sixth for the 3-run lead. Roger Lugo and Rafael Tejada collected both of Judson's hits as they were 2-of-3 on the day. JU's Kyle Kobernus took the loss as he went six innings and struck out one.
In Game 2 Judson held on for the win as the Eagles defeated USF 6-5 handing St. Francis (32-7, 12-1) its first CCAC loss of the year. Judson's win in Game 2 also ended USF's 17-game winning streak. Oscar DePablos led Judson by going 2-of-3 at the plate with his fourth triple of the season and recording three RBI. Ehrlich and Tejada each had a RBI, too. Juan P. DeArmas won his third game of the season as he went the distance and had one strikeout.
Judson will now face NCAA Division I Valparaiso University on Wednesday in Indiana.
College softball
Bethel 10, Judson 2: In day two of the NCCAA North Central Regional Judson hung with the No. 1 team in the nation for four innings before BC unleashed for 6 runs in the fifth inning to win 10-2. BC got ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning on an error by Judson and a 2-run home run. Lizzy Jacobson took the loss pitching 4½ innings. Judson had 4 hits in the game as Deb Leganski went 2-of-2 with 1 RBI and one run scored.
Judson 13, Trinity International 8: Making up Game 2 from an April 8 rainout in CCAC play, Judson (20-19, 10-8) completed their CCAC schedule with a 13-8 win over Trinity International (3-26, 2-12). Judson will now wait and see if it will make the CCAC post season tournament with its 10-8 record.
Judson hit two more home runs on the day as Debra Leganksi smashed her CCAC leading 12th home run and Lizzy Jacobson connected for her eighth on the season with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Leganski went 3-of-5 with 2 RBI and 1 run scored and Carrie Sensor, Nicole Dimiceli, Aimee Ewert, Tricia Lakotish, and Brittany Nicley each had 2 hits. Dimiceli also collected her 16th and 17th doubles on the season. Jacobson led the team with 5 RBI. Winning her ninth game of the season, Ewert pitched seven innings and had 4 strikeouts with only three walks.
Girls track
At Conant: Junior Nadiyah Spencer took first in the long jump (15-11.75) and Britney Whitehead took second in the 300 low hurdles (48.25) for Larkin.
"It is Nadiyah's first year jumping," said Larkin coach Jeremy Bloomberg. "Our goal for her this year was to hit 15-6, she crushed that today."
Erin McGrath took second in the 400 (2:24.14) and Nicole LaMantia took third in the triple jump (32-11) for Buffalo Grove.
Junior Kelsey Seiler took third in the 3,200 (11:30.58) and Kateleigh Pilson took third in the shot put (35-02) for Dundee-Crown.
Last year Conant took third in the 400 relay (47.94) and fourth in the 800 relay (1:42.08) at the Class AA state meet.
Saturday at the 21st annual Carol Koszola Classic, Conant flashed it speed again, taking first and setting meet records in the 400 relay (48.18), 800 relay (1:42.5), and 1,600 relay (4:08.54).
That helped lift the Cougars to second place with 100 points in the 14-team field at Lake Park in Roselle.
Rock Island won 6 events and the title with 106 points. Host Lake Park (88 points) took third, followed by St. Ignatius (75 points) and Leyden (46 points).
Conant returned all four runners from its 400 and 800 relay team, and the experience and talent showed.
Brianna Millar, Emily Quinones, Destiny Arps and Toni Graham, all seniors, powered the Cougars to victories in the 400 and 800 relays.
Sarah Gorden and Joelle Lien combined with Millar and Quinones to win the 1,600 relay.
"We're all comfortable with each other," said Millar who also finished second in the 100 (12.61). "We're confident we can get our hand-offs. We're all really close and we want to win."
The four seniors are not about to go quietly.
"We're ready," said Arps who finished second in the 200 (25.01). "Our hand-offs are smooth, but we want to get them down pat where everything is perfect."
Boys track
At Streamwood Invitational: Hosting and competing in the 2008 Sabre Invitational, Streamwood finished 8th overall among the eleven teams competing with 41 total points, but did have several successful individuals. Oak Park River Forest won the invite with 158 points followed by Wheeling (62 points) and Schaumburg (52).
David Shaw collected a Sabre title in the 440 meter run finishing the race with a time of 49.7. Thrower Nick Milne earned the only other Streamwood first with a distance of 142-feet-3 inches in the discus throw.
Neal Klein and Ikenna Aghadi each recorded third place finishes for Streamwood. Klein filled the No. 3 slot in the 3,200 meter run at 10:01.4, and Aghadi in the 100 dash with a time of 11.1 behind the first and second place time of 11.0.
