Adopt a cat in February
Naperville Area Humane Society is running a Desperate Housecats adoption promotion in February. During the promotion, the adoption fee for adult cats is $75 and includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, microchips and a vet exam. The shelter is open 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Firehouse Chili festival
West Chicago Park District will sponsor its annual Firehouse Chili Fest from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at VFW Post 6791, 431 N. Neltnor Blvd. Among the fire districts competing this year are West Chicago, Winfield, Carol Stream and Addison. Guests will be able to vote on their favorite chili for the People's Choice Award, and a panel of judges will select the best chili for the Judges Choice Award. This year's judges are John Karwoski, owner of John's Buffet in Winfield; West Chicago Mayor Michael Kwasman; and West Chicago resident Kevin Malony. The price is $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and children 12 and younger. Net proceeds benefit the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Burn Camp. Aurora man charged
Pablo L. Ramirez, 35, of the 700 block of Kane Street in Aurora, faces charges of aggravated battery to a police officer and battery, authorities said Monday. Police said Ramirez allegedly spit in the face of an arresting officer about 1:50 a.m. Saturday after he was taken into custody for driving without a valid license in the 400 block of Rathbone Avenue. The officer did not require medical treatment.
Police probe gunfire
Aurora police said Monday they are investigating an incident at 9 p.m. Saturday in which someone fired several shots at a porch in the 700 block of North View Street. No injuries were reported. Witnesses said they saw a small, black car leaving the scene.
