Briefs: Tollway info

The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority hosts an open house today, 4 to 7 p.m., regarding the rebuilding and widening of the Tri-State Tollway from Balmoral Avenue to the Wisconsin state line. The event is at the project field office, 1121 Lake-Cook Road, Suite O, Deerfield. Information regarding the impact of interchanges and bridge improvements through the corridor also will be available. No formal presentations will be made and participants can come and go at any time. Exhibits and other information will be available for viewing, and tollway representatives will be on hand to answer questions.

Craft show in Wauconda

The Wauconda American Legion will hold its craft show Saturday and Sunday at Wauconda High School, 600 N. Main St. The event is in conjunction with the Wauconda Chamber of Commerce business expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the high school cafeteria. About 50 crafters and vendors will offer items including jewelry, wood products and hand-sewn materials for sale. There is no entry fee. Accord reached

Grayslake officials agreed to a contract with three full-time union employees Tuesday night. Assistant Village Manager Greg Formica said the employees are full-time employees of the public works department. He said the union contract was set to expire in April. The new contract will run to 2011.

MCC financial aid help

McHenry County College is holding a workshop to help students complete federal financial aid forms online from 5 to 7 p.m. today in room A228 in the college. Appointments are necessary. To schedule yours, call (815) 455-8761.

Heart tests for students

Libertyville High School students will get free heart tests next week, courtesy of a Lake Bluff foundation. The Max Schewitz Foundation and the Midwest Heart Foundation will provide electrocardiogram tests, often called EKG tests, to students Feb. 28 and 29. The groups want to identify students at risk of sudden cardiac death and increase public awareness of the issue.

Re-enactor coming

A Civil War re-enactor representing former slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth will visit the Warren Township Historical Society on March 4. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Mother Rudd Home Museum, 4690 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee. For more information, call (847) 263-9540.

Teens win Honeywell prize

Three Lake County high school students have won scholarships to the Honeywell Scholars @ Presidential Classroom program, held March 2-8 in Washington, D.C. They will join students from around the globe learning about the interconnection between science, technology and public policy and meeting with elected officials, business leaders and government appointees to discuss current issues of global concern. Honeywell awards the scholarships after a rigorous application and review process based on academic achievement and community involvement. Winners are Matthew Farrenkopf of Buffalo Grove, a senior at Adlai Stevenson High School; Stephanie Coon, of Vernon Hills, a junior at Adlai Stevenson High School and Juliana McLain of Vernon Hills, a sophomore at Vernon Hills High School.
