Former Elgin High School student killed by car; no charges yet

Grief counselors descended on Elgin High School Monday to help students deal with the death of a former classmate who was struck and killed by a car Sunday afternoon.

John W. Keyes, 17, was struck by a sedan at 4:02 p.m. in the parking lot in the 200 block of Center Street in the city's near east side, police said.

He was taken to Sherman Hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

Elgin Deputy Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said police located the driver about a block away from the crash on Sunday and she came to the station for questioning. Swoboda said police have finished interviewing the driver.

He said he did not know her age, hometown or what kind of vehicle she was driving other than it was a mid-sized sedan.

Swoboda also said she had a passenger in the car, but could not provide any more information.

No charges had been filed as of midafternoon Monday.

The Kane County coroner's office said it will perform an autopsy on Keyes today.

Tony Sanders, spokesman for the Elgin Area School District U-46, said Keyes enrolled at Elgin High School from August 2008 to November 2008 before dropping out.

"We do have counselors on hand at Elgin High School for the students who remember John," Sanders said.

Police also have interviewed witnesses but are asking others with information to call (847) 695-4195.
