State of Wheaton event

The League of Women Voters of Wheaton will host a public forum on the State of the Community at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 at Franklin Middle School, 211 E. Franklin St., Wheaton. Mayor Michael Gresk, Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200 school board President Andy Johnson, and Wheaton Park District board President Phillip Luetkehans each will have seven minutes to speak to the audience. A question-and-answer session will follow. The doors will open at 7 p.m.

Anima invites to rehearsal

Anima-Young Singers of Greater Chicago, formerly the Glen Ellyn's Children's Chorus, invites students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades who like to sing to come to an open rehearsal at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 at the Glen Ellyn Park District building, third floor, 501 Hill. Tax levy open to input

The Naperville Park District has set its tentative property tax levy at just over $18.7 million for the 2009 levy year, which is a 5.3 percent increase over the previous year. Residents will have a chance to comment on the levy at a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17, at the park district administration building, 320 W. Jackson Ave.

Polar Express seeks volunteers

Lisle Polar Express is looking for enthusiastic and energetic volunteers to help when its trains run from Lisle to the North Pole (Chicago) and back on Sunday, Dec. 6. Volunteers are needed for one or both trains that leave the Lisle station at 9:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Duties include leading Christmas carols, reading the Polar Express story out loud, and encouraging fun. Rare book auction

Friends of the Oak Brook Public Library will sponsor a holiday silent auction of quality used and rare books. The books are on display in the lobby of the library, 600 Oak Brook Road. Selections include three cookbooks signed by chef-author Charlie Trotter; 16 volumes of Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey-Mathurin novels, and two Sibley guides for bird lovers. Bids will be accepted at the library until 5 p.m. Dec. 6 or by e-mail to friendsobpl@yahoo.com.
