Briefs: New primary care services director named
The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center named Sarah Allen of Waukegan as the new primary care services director. Allen is responsible for planning, coordinating and administering services for medical and dental care, prenatal and obstetric care, case management, WIC and clinical support services for five community health centers serving more than 80,000 Lake County residents. She previously served in leadership roles at several state and local agencies.
Teacher wins award
Mundelein High School social studies teacher Neil McCarthy has received an Outstanding Teacher Award from the University of Chicago. The prize was based on the feedback of former students who now attend the university. McCarthy is in his 11th year at Mundelein.
Township distributes winter supplies for needy children
Wauconda Township will distribute 100 coats, 100 pairs of gloves, 100 hats, and 100 pairs of pajamas, as well as toys to children of low-income families from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Township Community hall, 505 W. Bonner Road, Wauconda. Toys are donated through the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program. The township is one of six Toys for Tots distribution sites, and families had to register directly at those sites by Dec. 5 to receive gifts. Graffiti arrests made
Four juveniles have been arrested in connection with a spate of gang graffiti in Waukegan, police announced Friday. The graffiti was discovered in late November on four streets. The suspects are Waukegan teens, 13 to 16. They've been referred to the county's juvenile detention center on charges of criminal damage to property.
Toys for Tots drive
Waukegan sister radio stations WXLC-FM and WKRS-AM are backing a U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive that has collection points in Lake County. Those wishing to donate a new, unwrapped toy may do so at the radio stations' studios at 3250 Belvidere Road, Waukegan. NorthSide Community Bank has three locations for toy collection: 5103 Washington St., Gurnee; 800 N. Route 83 in Mundelein; and 1155 Milwaukee Ave., Riverwoods. WXLC and WKRS collected more than 1,800 toys for the Marines' effort last week. The toys will be distributed as Christmas gifts to needy children in Lake County through six distribution points.
