Lewis leads Lakes to upset of Grant
Lakes' girls track and field team pulled off a huge win for its program Monday.
Melissa Lewis won four individual events, as the Eagles defeated perennial North Suburban Conference power Grant 82-64. Lakes also beat Wauconda 115-30.
Lewis captured the 110-meter high hurdles (15.7), 300 low hurdles (49.5), high jump (5-0) and triple jump (31-11½).
Ariel Butzine won the 800 (2:22.1) and 1,600 (5:39.9) runs for the Eagles.
Grant's Bailey Wagner was the winner in the shot put (46-2½) and discus (144-11).
Warren d. Antioch: Heather Olson ran to victory in the 800 (2:31.6) and 1,600 (5:36.1) runs for the Blue Devils, who prevailed 78-68.
Antioch received two wins apiece from Erin Schoenfelder (110 high hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Jessica Long (long jump, triple jump).
Baseball
Carmel 3, Stevenson 0: Jordan Sivertsen pitched a complete-game 4-hit shutout, as the Corsairs improved to 7-0 with the nonconference win.
John Zeffery went 3-for-3, Don Stopka had 2 RBI and Bobby Lyne doubled for Carmel, which scored a pair of runs off Patriots ace Scott Firth in the third inning. Firth allowed 2 earned runs in 6 innings, striking out seven and walking two.
Sivertsen also had 7 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Stevenson fell to 5-4.
Lake Zurich 7, Warren 2: Joey DeBernardis fired a complete-game 4-hitter in the Bears' North Suburban Lake opener.
DeBernardis fanned six and walked three.
Lake Zurich (6-3) was led offensively by Tim Nolan (3-for-3, double, 2 RBI) and Reid Bergstrom (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI). DeBernardis and Austin Schmeisser also doubled.
"We played great defense, led by Bergstrom at short and a game-saving dive in left by Schmeisser," Bears coach Gary Simon said. "We had timely hitting in the sixth by Nolan, Bergstrom and Schmeisser."
Mundelein 10, N. Chicago 0: Starter Justin Piasecki threw 3 shutout innings for the Mustangs (9-1).
Jacobs 12, Grayslake C. 2: The visiting Golden Eagles broke open a close game by scoring 8 runs in the fifth.
Kurt Schmidt homered and singled for the Rams (7-3). Kevin O'Rourke suffered his first loss, allowing 4 runs in 4 innings, but only 1 run was earned, as the Rams made an uncharacteristic 4 errors.
CL South 4, Grayslake N. 2: The Knights spotted Crystal Lake South a 4-0 lead after three innings. Jim Butler had a single and an RBI for Grayslake North (2-3).
Softball
Mundelein 6, Lakes 3: Jessica Bjerning hit a 3-run homer for the Mustangs (2-5), who won their second straight.
Maddie Riordan and Nicole Speck each had 2 hits for Lakes.
Grayslake North 11, D-C 1: Sam Fletcher went 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for the Knights (4-2). Winning pitcher Carly Borders (2 doubles), Sam Myers and Amanda Leon (double) each had 2 hits. Borders struck out eight.
Libertyville 3, St. Viator 0: Kat Bernard pitched a 2-hitter for the Wildcats (7-2), who received 2 hits apiece from Katy Pfund and Toni Kintzel.1
Wauconda 4, Harvard 0: Kayla Stos threw a 4-hitter, striking out six. Marie Nebgen tripled and doubled, and Sam Palucska doubled twice for the Bulldogs (4-5).
Boys volleyball
Warren d. Stevenson: Ryan Schuette and Jeff Halvorsen had 8 and 7 kills, respectively, as the Blue Devils won their 20th match thanks to a 25-18, 20-25, 25-14 win.
Halvorsen and Derrick Norris each served 2 aces for Warren (20-2, 3-0 North Suburban). Mike McNally had 5 blocks, while Schuette totaled four. Gordon Booker led Warren in digs with 10. Norris and Halvorsen each had nine.
Stevenson (9-6, 2-1) received 9 kills from Brad Feiger. Jason Giecek was 74-of-75 setting with 22 assists.
Girls soccer
Wauconda 8, Woodstock 0: Jess Hellweg scored 3 goals, and Kaitlyn Llewellyn and Hannah Voyta each netted a pair for the visiting Bulldogs, who led the nonconference match 5-0 at halftime.
Aimee Prudhomme also scored, while Becky Breakfield earned the shutout in goal.
Lakes 7, Grant 3: Alex Neal had 3 goals and an assist for Eagles (2-6) in their North Suburban Prairie Division opener. Ashley Neubeck added a pair of goals.
Girls lacrosse
Deerfield 6, Lake Zurich 5: Mary Handrahan scored all 5 goals for the Bears.
