U-46 students win automotive technology scholarships

Three Elgin Area School District U-46 students have won scholarships to study automotive technology. Last spring, the businesses comprising the Elgin Area Elite Auto Repair Centers Powered by NAPA Autocare created a scholarship fund to support high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in the field of automotives. Seniors from all U-46 high schools were eligible, and the opportunity was promoted by the district's Career and Technical Education program and automotive teachers at the schools.

Scholarship winners are: Adrian Corona of Larkin High School, $1,000; Austin Kaszuba of Elgin High School, $500; and Eric Severson of Larkin High School, $500. All three graduates are now enrolled at Elgin Community College.

The $2,000 donation from the NAPA group was made to the U-46 Educational Foundation and designated for the scholarships. The group consists of Barnhart Service, Bunge's Tire, Emil's Garage, K&S Auto, Kellenberger Auto, Martin Service, McLean Auto, Schneider Auto and Hawk's Auto Parts.

"This is another way that our group can give back to the community," said Dave Kellenberger. "We were looking at another opportunity to go with our 'Oil Change for Charity' event that raises funds for Operation Jingle Bells, and we felt that education would be a perfect fit for us. Our goal is to continue funding this scholarship so that a lack of funds does not stop students from continuing their education."
