What's up in U-46 schools this week
Here is what's in the news for the week of Sept. 14-19 at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For more information, visit u-46.org.
Board meeting
• On Monday, the U-46 Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. in Room 140 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The public is welcome to attend and provide citizen comments to the school board at the open meetings. For information on the board, visit the "School Board & Community" link on the district Web site at u-46.org.
Elgin High
• On Sunday, the Elgin High School Homecoming Parade begins at 1 p.m. at Festival Park, 132 S. Grove Ave. Everyone will gather at Mad Maggie's Restaurant in Elgin after the parade.
South Elgin High
• On Wednesday, the South Elgin High School Booster Foundation will hold their annual "Meat and Greet" dinner at 5 p.m. for anyone interested in the future success of the school. "Back to School Night" will follow at 7 p.m.
• On Saturday, the Homecoming Parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Riverside Park by the bridge.
Streamwood High
• On Tuesday through Thursday, a Book Fair will be held in the Streamwood High School library during school hours.
• On Wednesday, a pasta dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the commons, 701 W. Schaumburg Road. This is a fundraiser for the Booster Club. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 per family.
• On Thursday, the fall open house will be held at 7 p.m. Parents will meet in the main gym.
Larsen
• On Friday, the first dance will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Larsen Middle School, 665 Dundee Ave., Elgin.
Channing
• On Friday, come and enjoy an evening of fun, food and friends at Fiesta Channing from 5-8 p.m. at the playground at Channing Elementary School, 63 S. Channing St., Elgin. Mexican traditions will be celebrated.
In other news
• The adult education program of School District U-46 has served area residents since the late 1970s. Every year, approximately 600 students sign up to be a part of this program. The students are provided a number of options. Individualized and small group instruction for GED classes in English and Spanish are offered with free daytime and evening classes available. Or they can enroll in computer and office training classes also offered during the daytime and evening.
An additional component of the adult education program that is available to students is the Family Literacy program which provides age-appropriate materials to help pregnant and parenting students begin their children on the road to a more successful education.
The services offered include: adult basic education classes in English; GED instruction in English and Spanish; vocational training in keyboarding and Word application; and family literacy.
Who is eligible? Individuals who are 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in high school; who want to gain basic educational skills necessary to function successfully in society; and who do not have a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have not achieved an equivalent level of education.
