Scouting: Glenbard S. @ Batavia

Glenbard South (1-1, 0-0) at Batavia (1-1, 0-0)

Western Sun Conference

Game time: 7:30 p.m. today.

Last week: Glenbard S. 42, Fenton 0; Batavia 27, W. Chicago 6.

Last year: Glenbard South 32, Batavia 21.

Outlook: Glenbard South made giant improvements last week thanks to All-Area quarterback Trace Wanless returning from a sprained ankle that kept him out of the season-opening loss to Glenbard West. He completed 10 of 14 passes for 189 yards and 4 touchdowns while rushing for 58 yards on only 3 carries. Wanless is prepared to carry the offensive load, but the Raiders also have explosive athletes like Nick Slezak and Connor Douglas ready to break loose. The Raiders' top athletes will play on both sides of the ball, including standout fullback-defensive end Austin Teitsma. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound senior boasts scholarship offers from Northern Illinois, Ball State, Buffalo and Illinois State. He'll be in charge of containing a Batavia offense that suffered a huge loss last week. Running back Pete Koczmara, also a third-year starting linebacker, is likely out this week with a knee injury. That puts extra pressure on sophomore quarterback Noel Gaspari, son of Bulldogs coach Mike Gaspari, as well as running backs Braden Hartmann and Emund Kabba. The good news for the Bulldogs is they still boast a pair of third-year starting linebackers in Ian Powers and Mike Greco. With Geneva looming next week, this is a crucial game in terms of Glenbard South's Western Sun title hopes.

Next week: Geneva at Glenbard South; Batavia at Rochelle.
