St. Edward's Yohn named MVC Newcomer of Week
It didn't take Katie Yohn long to start piling up awards at the college level.
Yohn, a St. Edward graduate and two-time Daily Herald all-area co-captain who is now a freshman at Bradley University, was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for women's basketball the league office announced Monday.
Yohn averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and a team-best 5.0 assists per game in her first two games.
"I'm still adjusting and getting used to everything at the college level," Yohn said Monday. "But it's nice to see all the hard work paying off."
Yohn scored a team-high 16 points off the bench in her first collegiate game at Northern Illinois. She also dished out a game-high 5 assists in the season opener against the Huskies. Yohn made her first career start Sunday against Illinois-Chicago and responded by making 6-of-10 shots. In addition to recording a game-high 5 assists, she contributed 13 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal as she helped the Braves to a 79-64 victory.
She and fellow freshman Olivia Allen of Lake Zurich both scored in double figures in the first two games of the season. Yohn's 16 points against NIU is the third-highest point total by a Bradley freshman in a debut and she joined Allen as the first freshmen to score 10 or more points in their first two games as a Brave since Judy Burns in 1981-82.
"There are things she needs to work on and she knows that but she's just so poised for a freshman," said Bradley coach Paula Buscher. "She's going to be a great college player."
Yohn and the Braves return to action Sunday when Bradley travels to Champaign to take on Big Ten Conference foe Illinois in a 1:05 p.m. game at Assembly Hall.
