Wrap: Geneva softball, Batavia baseball notch key wins
Melissa Barber batted 3-for-3 and nailed her third home run of the season as Geneva (5-6, 2-1) topped Kaneland 9-7 Wednesday in Maple Park.
Winning pitcher Anna McCaffrey allowed 2 earned runs over seven innings and struck out five.
For Kaneland (7-2, 2-1), Mallory Huml took her first loss after winning her first six decisions this year. Linsdsay Hansen and Sara Rose both doubled.
West Aurora 3, Wheaton Warrenville South 2 (9 innings): With two outs in the ninth, Marybeth Vasquez singled and moved to second on an error. She reached third on a single and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Stephanie Becker won her eighth game by allowing only 2 hits over 9 innings. The Blackhawks remain perfect at 11-0.
St. Charles North 3, Larkin 2:ŒThe North Stars improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the UEC. Natalie Capone batted 4-for-4 and swiped two bases. Amanda Ciran added a solo homer.
Baseball
Batavia 6, Sycamore 2: With the bases loaded in the seventh, Jordan Coffey (5-0) struck out the side to clinch the Bulldogs' win and give Sycamore (8-3, 6-1) its first Western Sun Conference loss. At the plate, Coffey had 3 hits and scored twice. Brian Brandenburg homered in the fifth. Batavia is 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
Geneva 8, Glenbard South 5: Cory Hofstetter nailed 2 homers and Dan Rowe and Justin Doty added 1 each in the Vikings' (10-3, 4-3) WSC win in Glen Ellyn. On the mound, Doty won his third game, allowing four earned runs over seven innings.
Kaneland 6, Rochelle 4: The Knights improved to 6-4. Nick wagner scored twice and had two RBI while Jay Levita stole two bases.
West Aurora 8, Glenbard East 7:ŒCory Walden batted 3-for-4 and DJ Smith drove in four runs for the Blackhawks (8-5, 2-3). With the tying run on second with two outs in the seventh, Jesse Pena came in and got a groundout for his second save.
Marian 9, Aurora Central Catholic 5:ŒMarian broke a 5-4 lead open with five runs in the seventh. The Chargers (9-4, 1-3) got the tying run to the plate in the bottom half, but couldn't get the big hit. Mark Adams went 3-for-4 with a homer.
Boys tennis
St. Charles North 7, East Aurora 0: John Mittvick won his first singles match 6-0, 6-0 and David Johnson and Christian Hoskey took first doubles 6-1, 6-2. The North Stars remain unbeaten in three UEC matches.
Batavia 4, Oswego 3: Fourth doubles pair Tyler Mabry and Ethan Carlson trailed 5-0 in the first set before rallying to win 7-5 and they went on to win the match in three sets. The Bulldogs are 5-2 in dual meets.
Men's baseball
Aurora 16, Elmhurst 7: The Spartans powered their way to victory as they drilled 7 homers. Kevin Fitzgerald and Ray Kosmicki each hit 2 and Josh Damore, Tony Wellner and Matt Anklam added 1 apiece. Kyle Kapusta pitched four 1-hit innings in relief to pick up his third win.
Women's softball
Aurora 3-9, Wisconsin Lutheran 1-0:ŒDana Cebular went 3-for-3 with a triple in the opener. Anna Snyder pitched a 3-hitter and struck out 12 for Aurora (22-6, 13-1). The sequel saw Cebular hit a homer and drive in three. Snyder (12-3) pitched four innings for her second win of the day.
