Judson climbs top tier

Judson University in Elgin ranked in the top tier of schools in U.S. News and World Report's Baccalaureate-Midwest division in its 2009 edition of America's Best Colleges. The magazine, which has rated the country's colleges since the early 1980s, rates by test scores, peer reputation, selectivity and alumni giving. Judson first appeared in the Top Tier by ranking 54th in the U.S. News and World Report's 2005 Best Colleges survey. Last year, the university climbed higher in the Top Tier by jumping to 21st in the rankings and now has earned the 18th spot. The 1,200-student school costs about $23,500 in tuition and fees each year to attend.

Pig roast in Pingree Grove

St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Pingree Grove is holding its annual pig roast 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the church. It costs $6 per plate for adults (the fee includes a side dish) and $5 for children 11 and younger. Baked goods will be for sale as well, there will be a free moonwalk for the children and people can also register their kids for Sunday school. For details, call (847) 464-5440.

Harvest Market open

The Downtown Elgin Harvest Market is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Oct. 8 at the city hall parking lot, the corner of East Highland and Douglas avenues. Area growers bring fresh, quality vegetables, fruits, flowers, bread, meat, eggs, olive oil and more. Special events are planned for each week as well.
