Enroll in literacy program:
The Literacy Connection is offering tutoring this summer for children entering first through fifth grade who need extra help in reading or math. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday from July 9 through Aug. 14. You can enroll your child anytime between July 9 and Aug. 3. Tutoring sessions will be held at the Literacy Connection's office in the Meadowdale Shopping Center in Carpentersville. The program costs $60; the cost will be prorated depending on your child's start date. Call (847) 742-6565.
Carpentersville needs commission members:
The Carpentersville planning and zoning commission seeks two residents to serve on the seven-member commission. Anyone interested must be registered to vote and must have been a resident of the village for at least one year. The commission generally meets once a month. Duties include review and consideration of subdivision plats, zoning variation requests, special permit requests and certain administrative appeals. In some instances the commission is empowered to make final determinations, while in other instances the commission functions in an advisory capacity to the village board by providing recommendations. To be considered, send a letter of interest to Village President Ed Ritter, 1200 LW Besinger Drive, Carpentersville, 60110, no later than July 24.
Church hosts annual barbecue:
The First Congregational Church of Huntley is hosting its annual Fay's Pork Chop Barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 25. The event, which will be held at the corner of Main and Myrtle streets, features Fay's famous pork chops, a full range of sides and live entertainment.
