Briefs: Fundraiser for Elk Grove man

Friends of Elk Grove Village resident and Conant High School graduate Eric Mogensen will host a fundraiser for him in Schaumburg tonight as he faces a medical crisis. The 30-year-old Mogensen, a graphic artist, illustrator, photographer and Web designer, is facing several brain surgeries after being diagnosed just weeks ago with arteriovenous malformation and a brain aneurysm, said friend Yola Boszko, one of the organizers of the fundraiser. It takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. today, Nov. 14, at John Barleycorn Bar and Restaurant, 1100 American Lane, Schaumburg. Cost is $40 at the door, which includes food and beer. Lions Club food drive

The Palatine Lions Club will hold a food drive and recycling collection from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Nov. 14, and Saturday, Nov. 15, at Slade Street Station, 117 W. Slade St., Palatine. The worldwide service club is asking for nonperishable food and used eyeglasses, hearing aids, cellular phones, ink jet cartridges and keys. For more information, call (847) 609-5805.

Arboretum tree lights:

The Arboretum of South Barrington invites the public on Saturday, Nov. 15, to kick off the season's festivities with the lighting of a 40-foot holiday tree. The shopping center will also host several events including giveaways, children's activities and sleigh rides. The holiday party starts 4 p.m. Saturday with "Rockin' Around the Holiday Tree" with Radio Disney Road Crew holiday party where the first 150 kids under 15 will receive a stocking filled with Radio Disney goodies. Santa will light the tree at 5:30 p.m. and pose for photos. The center will also light a 12-foot tall menorah on each night of Hanukkah starting Dec. 21.
