Fox Valley briefs

Scholarship winners:

A pair of violinists from Carpentersville have earned the 2009 Elgin Symphony Orchestra's Jean Hove Young Musicians Scholarship. Dearion Wright, a sixth-grade student at Lakewood School, and Karla Barrera, a seventh-grade student at Carpentersville Middle School, will receive two years of private music instruction, season subscriptions to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra Classics Series, as well as free instrument rental. The musicians were selected from a group of seven finalists after auditioning before the ESO Music Director Michael Hanson, musicologist Dan Maki and ESO violinist Susan Thorne. The Jean Hove Young scholarship is designed to develop the talent of young musicians, especially those who have been historically underrepresented in the field of classical music.

Memorial for Laube:

Fox River Grove officials have set July 11 as the day they will recognize former Village President Kay Laube, who died in office last summer at the age of 61. Officials are holding a memorial for Laube at 8:15 p.m., inside Picnic Memorial Park, where there is a bench, granite boulder and plaque and tree in her honor. Laube's husband, Ed, and their son Edmund are also expected to attend. For details, call the village at (847) 639-3170.
